1942 Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar + 1889 Silver Five Shilling, Bargin?
Was at the market today when I spotted there 2 coins.
I paid 12, ($19.80) for the 5 Shilling and 7.50 ($11.56) for the Half Dollar. The Crown is .925 fine silver and contains .8409 troy ounce of pure silver. Whats everyone think, I reckon I got a pretty good deal. http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/1294/coins1g.jpg http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/7113/coins2.jpg |

For metal, not so good. I expect I've have paid for the Crown anyhow. Looks in very good shape for it's age.

Yeah you overpaid on the Walking Liberty Half. You can get those here in the states for $6-$7 USD each with a little searching around. I cant speak on the other coin though.

23x face on the half is OUTRAGEOUS!!! You got screwed (it's only worth half of that). As for the shilling, to each his own, but you essentially paid $6 over spot. Unless there is some numismatic value to it, you got nailed there too IMHO. But hey, at least you have some REAL MONEY!!!
Keep hunting, Jeff |

Well does look like I lost out on the half dollar, but $5/3 isn't so bad, wouldn't even put much blame on the coin dealer after all it is a foreign coin.
So its not going to be as numerous over here. As for the shilling I think I did better, I'd say its at least Very Fine and looking at simple coins for sale, plus the value given by a coin book Ive got, I'd say it at least worth 20. |

Don't get me wrong been collecting coins since I was around 9, but I got most of them from my uncle who used to do house clearances. I got 99% of my collection that way, It was amazing what would turn up. He once gave me a shopping bag full of old half pennies from between 1900-1963. So yea its rare that I buy coins. As for the five shilling $6 over spot isn't bad for me, 120 years, and its a nice coin in good condition for an extra 3 suits me fine. |

Algiz, the most outrageous premiums I have paid, especially in ignorance, have been on British coins. I suppose the burn just works across the pond that way. It's just a lesson and you won't forget it. Live and learn. There are far worse burns.

Also, if it really bugs you just remember what Saul Mine says
(paraphrased) "There will come a day when you won't remember what you paid for your metal you will just be glad you have it." I've had to repeat that a few times on some occasions. :) |

Yes, you could have bought hundreds of them at those prices. Everybody gets it in the pooper once. You got lucky and learned your lesson cheaply. |
Re: 1942 Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar + 1889 Silver Five Shilling, Bargin?
it may not be $30 worth of silver, but it's definitely $30 worth of good looking coins.
and the way things are going, it'll be $30 worth of silver soon enough. i think the half is about 12.5 grams, i don't know if that's silver or total weight. i guess it's about 1.3 troy ounces. when silver gets to $23, it'll be $30 worth of silver in those 2 coins. :5_1_120: http://www.silverwalkingliberty.com/...alking-liberty i guess the 1942D is the rare one of that year. |

I don't know much about American coins but I thought that half dollar was very nice and in great condition. Do think some people get caught up in intrinsic silver value, as I said in the case of the Crown $6 over spot isn't bad for me, 120 years, and its a nice coin in good condition for an extra 3 suits me fine. |
